human Beings being Humans

Being Humans

Monsters lurk amongst us
With hides of human skin
They don the masks of you and me
And costumes of our kin

They dwell in secrets that we guard
And flourish in our silence
They feast upon our vanities
And grow with our indifference

Monsters swell till they're too big
To fit around our eyes
And then as horror grips our souls
Their talons claw our lives

They rip apart our ignorance
And blind us with perception
Then as we stumble and we flee
We curse their sly deception

We cross our swords and swear an oath
"To find them all and kill them!"
And as our cries rise to the skies
We drown out our children

"Daddy you are scaring me!"
They're lost in our confusion
And twisted sinews borne of hate
Engulf us in delusions.

"Mommy! Daddy! Tell us why,
Why do we need guns and walls?"
"Because the Monsters who will hurt us
All have fangs and paws"

Human Beings

The only way to differentiate
A Monster from a Being
Is when the Monster's done it all
And left the Beings weeping.

This is the article which inspired the poem. It brought me to tears.

Here's an excerpt:

Catalogue of abuse

The court heard details of horrific abuse inflicted on the three-year old:

• She had been kicked, beaten, slapped, jumped on and held over a burning fire

• She had been put into a clothes dryer spinning at top heat

• Wrestling moves copied from a computer game had been practised on her

• She had been folded into a sofa and sat on, shoved into piles of rubbish, dragged through a sandpit half naked, flung against a wall and dropped from a height onto the floor

• And she had been whirled rapidly on an outdoor rotary clothes line until she was thrown off.

At one point, she was left lying unconscious for 36 hours without medical attention.
