the heart
Can you tie down a Heart?
Can you make it stay?
Can you stop it from racing,
from running away?
Can you cage its Intentions
and box up its Will?
Can you tame its Desires
and render it still?
Can you lord over a Heart
and teach it to behave?
Make the Mind the Master
and the Heart its Slave?
Can you contain its Hunger?
Subdue its Thirsts?
Inhibit its lustful
and passionate Bursts?
Can you bridle a Heart
and somehow hold sway
over its Instincts
to gallop and stray?
I can reign in my Heart
-try- to muzzle its Itches,
gag its Compulsions
and bottle its Wishes.
I can chain up my Heart
and shackle it tight,
but I can't stop its Pining
or impede
its inevitable
Flight.
